House Show Review

July 21st, 2009

So, as before I mentioned we had a house show for my birthday. With every house show comes complications; especially when it is your very first house! Held at a family friends house, I hosted my first show that went fairly well. Ashes Of A Fallen Hero, Askyla, Approaching Skylight, The Scenery and Ashes Of Erin were scheduled to play, but unfortunatly the last two were unable to.. Ashes Of A Fallen Hero was the first up. They are a Metal/Hardcore band from Gila Bend and they basically work, eat, and play music. It is literally a rare moment to see them sleep! As we all know, being the opening band can be difficult, but you would never know with these boys. They were all so spirited! “We do what we love and we love the people who support us.” -Vando, (vocals). AOAFH definatly gave it their all and amazed me!

Next to play was Askyla. The previous time I saw them play, they had been added to the show last minute, but now that I finally got to see them with time to prepare I was very pleased with their performance! They all coordinate very well when playing and you can see the happiness on ther faces when they are playing. Approaching Skylight was the last to play and I was very anxious to see them play. One, because I’ve never seen them play before and I love their music, and two, my friend Chance and I wanted to see them “Drop phat beats”. They did pretty well and didn’t have any mess ups. Although, I did notice that Marissa (vocalist) have some trouble getting enough breath to finish her lines, but otherwise I enjoyed the show and was more than ecstatic with all the bands that played and I so grateful that they agreed to play. I was very sorry that The Scenery and Ashes Of Erin couldn’t play because they are two of my favorite local bands by far.

Now for the mishaps! Haha. So first off, I was 30 minutes late to my own show which I got crap for but hey, at least I got there, right?? Oh, and my favorite was when Drew (bassist) from Ashes Of Erin calls me up and says that he is at his studio to get the PA System for the show but he has locked his keys in his car. Now usually when his car is in park it won’t lock but it just has to on this day! So he had his keys locked in his car along with his bass and the car was running therefore wasting gas and air conditioning. Haha. Despite everything that happened everyone said they had a great time, and that was the whole purpose of it! So, the next time I have another show I now know what to expect and hopefully everything will be more smooth! Til then keep supporting all the local talent we have and keep checking up with the Local Bands Of Arizona page!!

Local Show/Band Review for 6/24/09

June 26th, 2009

Wendesday night Dr. Acula along with several other bands: Aithia, M.P.O.E., For The Dream, What Destroys Us, Behold The Dreamer, From The Pawn, and Autumn Black performed at The Sets. The place was a little hard to find, maybe because I’ve never been there, haha, but it was a decent size.

Aithia was up first and we all know how hard it is to be the opening band because people are usually still getting there and they don’t move much. Nonetheless, they did pretty well. Larry (vocals) and Rian (bass) were the most energetic of the band. They had solid screaming for the most part, but barely interacted with the crowd. Martin (A Breath Before Death) helped with vocals on a Devil Wears Prada cover. There was only one mishap with the stage. While playing the last song the bassist and vocalist collided but they picked right back up. Next was My Philosophy On Euthanasia who didn’t move much till the second song. They sort of interacted with the crowd but I would say that Preston (guitarist) and Sterling (drums) were the most active. They had some ghetto drums that produced some sick beats! Only one thing I noticed was that the other two guitarist faced the back a lot.

For The Dream was next and they were super energetic and had lots of crowd reaction. They had some sick breakdowns and let a spectator, John, come on the stage and sing “There’s No Justice, It’s Just Us with them.” Over all their performance was good and screams were solid! I have a video of them on my Myspace if you would like to see them! What Destroys Us played next and for it being my first time seeing them, they really impressed me. They had insane breakdowns, were interactive, crowd friendly, and  had someone named Jake help with screams. My friend described them as riff masters, haha! I would say they had a passionate performance and coordinated very well on the stage.

Now i will just go out of order, but From The Pawn had really upbeat and moving music with sick riffs and a dynamic act. I especially favored their instrumental endings. This was also the first time I’ve seen Behold The Dreamer and they were really great performers! They had excellent timing and threw down in synch, and once again, John came up to help with the lower screams. They were humorous, active, and the drummer was insane! Askyla was added last minute to the show and even though they only played a few songs and had short breakdowns they got an encore from the crowd!

Autumn Black was next to last to play and I have to say that the drummer was very social and nice while talking to the crowd when they were setting up. Being a hardcore band they had one of the most intense breakdowns of the show. The guitarists and bassist’s hands were moving so furiously and the drummer had one of the most complicated set ups of the night! Also, they had a very interesting sound when they played the keys, but while while they played everyone stood still and i don’t know if it was because of the time being 11:34 pm or because of their sound beng so intense and ever changing.

And last but not least, DR. ACULA! While setting up, I looked around and could tell everyone was a little tired because of the moshing and craziness, but as soon as they started playing they lit up the stage! The keyboardist was nuts! Lucky he had his keyboard attached to his stand or else it would have ended up on the other side of the room! They definatly had the most breakdowns as well as hilarious samples and they had raw, vile vocals that were so intense you could see the veins on his head! All in all it was a really impressive show! Make sure you check each bands Myspace and listen to their music and keep supporting the local music scene!

Local Show Review from 6/14/09

June 18th, 2009
The Joint held a show on 6/14/09. Laconic and Ashes Of Erin were headlining and others that played were Salvation’s Lost and Pulsic. Pulsic was the first up and they had lots of energy and were pretty humorous with the spectators. Salvation’s Lost had good music, I favored the drums the most.

If you have heard Ashes Of Erin’s music on their Myspace or have heard of them then you probably already know that Jenna is the lead singer for them and she also screams. If you’ve only heard them on the computer then you’ll be in for a good time seeing them live! Jenna may be tiny but she’s defiantly got throat ripping vocals to compliment the raw agression of Andy (drums), Drew (bass), Chi Chi (guitar), and Bryan (guitar). Together they create a melodic blend of music that is rare to come by.

Finally, Laconic. I looked up the word Laconic and what came up was “crisp: brief and to the point; effectively cut short” This word may very well suit them because of the way i found them. I was planning on going to a show in their hometown of Scottsdale, AZ and this particular show happened to have a commercial that had been put on the the profiles of the bands play. I listened to the old K&Z show commercial and a snippet of Laconic’s song Epilogue and I was hooked! I guess you can say that this event fits into their name because they can draw you in at that moment and their music is straight up and nothing short of being real. When I went to that show and heard them live I made it my goal to see them again. They played that night at The Joint and still hearing them a second time amazed me. Put Lee (drums), Sanjay (lead guitar), and Mike (bass) together to create spine crushing breakdowns and paired with Danny’s (vox) wide-ranged vocals and chilling scream you can’t help but get a little crazy! Grab their CD for more mind numbing awesomeness!

Make sure to check out everyone!
